Everything you need to travel Gilgit-Baltistan
Visas, the best season, how to get here, safety and more — answered by a local team that runs these trips every week.
Travel info for international guests
Pakistan is more accessible — and more welcoming — than most travellers expect. Here's the practical side, sorted.
Visas & entry
Most nationalities can apply for Pakistan's online e-visa (visa.nadra.gov.pk). We provide the hotel/tour confirmation and invitation letter you need for the application, and guide you through it. Make sure your passport is valid 6+ months.
Getting here
Fly into Islamabad, then either a scenic 1-hour flight to Gilgit or Skardu (weather-dependent) or a 2-day drive up the Karakoram Highway — an adventure in itself. We arrange every transfer, airport pickups included.
Is it safe?
Gilgit-Baltistan is one of Pakistan's safest and most welcoming regions, with very low crime and famously hospitable communities. You travel with vetted local guides, and we monitor road and weather conditions daily.
Permits
Most of Gilgit-Baltistan needs no special permit for foreign tourists. A few border or restricted zones (and some high peaks) require an NOC — if your route needs one, we handle the paperwork for you.
Best time to visit
Spring (Apr–May) for blossoms, summer (Jun–Aug) for high treks, autumn (Sep–Oct) for golden colours, winter for snow and stargazing. We tailor the route to the season — see our blog for a month-by-month guide.
Health & altitude
Trips are paced for sensible acclimatisation. Bring any personal medication; travel insurance covering trekking/altitude is strongly recommended. Our teams are first-aid trained.
Money
Pakistani Rupee is the local currency. Carry some cash (USD/EUR exchanges easily in Gilgit); ATMs exist in towns but can be unreliable in remote valleys. Your tour costs can be settled with us directly.
Food & dietary needs
All meals are halal, and we happily arrange vegetarian, vegan or other dietary requirements — just tell us when booking. Expect fresh local cuisine, apricots, trout and endless chai.
Common questions
Do you cater to religious or cultural group tours?
Yes. We regularly host groups with specific needs — halal kitchens, vegetarian/Jain meals, prayer-time-aware itineraries, and visits to heritage sites such as the Kargah Buddha. Tell us your group's requirements and we'll build around them.
Is Gilgit-Baltistan suitable for female and solo travellers?
Absolutely — it's a popular, comfortable destination for women and solo travellers. We can arrange female-friendly accommodation and, on request, female staff.
What languages do your guides speak?
Our guides speak English, Urdu and local languages (Shina, Burushaski, Wakhi, Balti). Guiding in other languages can be arranged for groups.
How do we pay and is a deposit required?
We confirm trips with a deposit and settle the balance on arrival. Contact us for current payment options for international clients.
Still have questions?
Tell us your nationality, dates and what you'd love to see — we'll handle visas, logistics and the whole itinerary.
