Hunza Valley: Forts, Apricots and Glacier Lakes

Gilgit Adventure Club10 June 20261 min read

Ancient forts, turquoise Attabad Lake and views of Rakaposhi from your breakfast table — here's why Hunza is the jewel of the Karakoram.

If you only have a few days in Gilgit-Baltistan, spend them in Hunza.

What to see

  • Baltit & Altit Forts — centuries-old strongholds in Karimabad with sweeping valley views.
  • Attabad Lake — a startling turquoise lake formed in 2010, now ringed by cafés and boat rides.
  • Eagle's Nest — the sunrise viewpoint over Rakaposhi (7,788 m) and Lady Finger.
  • Passu Cones — the cathedral-like peaks that line the Karakoram Highway.

Local flavour

Hunza is famous for its apricots, mulberries and walnuts, its longevity, and its warm Wakhi and Burushaski-speaking hosts. Don't leave without trying apricot-kernel oil and harissa.

How to do it

A classic 2-day Hunza jeep safari covers the forts, Attabad and the Hopper glacier viewpoints comfortably. Pair it with a stay in Karimabad for golden-hour photography.
