Festivals & Living Culture of Gilgit-Baltistan

Gilgit Adventure Club3 June 20261 min read

From thundering polo at Shandur to spring's Navroz celebrations, Gilgit-Baltistan's calendar is alive with music, sport and centuries-old tradition.

The mountains are only half the story — Gilgit-Baltistan's culture is just as unforgettable.

Shandur Polo Festival (July)

On the world's highest polo ground (3,700 m), teams from Gilgit and Chitral play free-style polo as it was a century ago — no rules, all heart — surrounded by thousands of spectators camped under the stars.

Navroz (March)

The Persian new year is celebrated across the region with music, spring cleaning, traditional foods and community gatherings.

Harvest & local life

Through summer and autumn, villages mark the apricot and wheat harvests with communal work, song and dance. You'll hear the daff and surnai, and might be pulled into a ceremonial attan.

Languages & hospitality

GB is astonishingly diverse — Shina, Burushaski, Wakhi and Balti are all spoken here. What unites them is legendary hospitality: expect endless cups of salt tea and an open door.

Travelling with a local guide means you don't just watch these moments — you're welcomed into them. Plan a culture-focused trip with us.
